Hellespont

Hellespont
   The Dardanelles strait, strategically situated between the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea (qq.v.), and, thus, of vital importance to the security of Constantinople (q.v.). Its entrance was guarded by the island of Tenedos (q.v.). The two important cities along the Hellespont were Abydos and Gallipoli (qq.v.). Control of the Hellespont was a lifeline that enabled Constantinople to survive even if an enemy controlled northwestern Asia Minor (q.v.) and the city's European hinterland. The survival of Constantinople for a century after the Ottomans (q.v.) expanded into Europe can be attributed not only to the city's massive lands walls but also to its control of the Hellespont.
